Kind Avon Valley Student Donates Hair for Good Cause

A kind hearted 14-year-old from The Avon Valley School and Performing Arts College has recently had her long hair cut and has donated it to the Little Princess Trust, a charity who provide real hair wigs free of charge to children and young adults up to the age of 24, who have lost their own hair due to cancer treatment and other illnesses.

Year 10, Garrick House student, Megan Gyles had her hair cut, at Experience Hair Design, Regent Street, and has sent her hair off to help someone in need of a wig following medical treatment. Megan, who is a high achieving dancer, has always wanted to donate her hair but has never had a long enough break in between dance competitions and shows. However, with all dance competitions and performances currently postponed Megan took the opportunity to donate her hair, and raise money for the charity.

Initially Megan set her fundraising target at £550, the average amount needed to make a real hair wig, but soon exceeded the amount and has so far raised £735.

The Little Princess Trust provides free real hair wigs to children and young people, who have lost their own hair through cancer treatment or other conditions. Using hair donations and fundraising money the charity manufactures and fits beautiful real hair wigs. Since establishing itself in 2006, the charity has supplied over 8000 wigs to children and young

Alison Davies, Headteacher, said, “During lockdown it was wonderful to see lots of people across the country using their initiative to do things that would help and support others. It has been wonderful to hear about the positive things our students have done since we closed to most students back in March. It is lovely to hear that Megan has not only donated her hair but has also raised more than enough money to produce a wig which will be gratefully received by someone in need.”
